Launching from CNN Indonesia, on Sunday, 17/12/2023, there is an expression that it was the Dutch Colonial Government who brought cassava to Indonesia from Peru, around 1850. This statement was revealed by one of the researchers and historians who graduated from the Faculty of Humanities, University of Indonesia, Christopher Reinhart.
His statement is reinforced by the observation of the Relief at Borobudur Temple, which states that the original Indonesian food does not have cassava. There are only Asem, Jackfruit, and Banana.
"Cassava was only introduced in Indonesia, around the 1850s. Cassava was brought from Peru by the Dutch Colonial Government. And planted for the first time in Maluku," he said as quoted from Antara.
Reinhart's findings are one of his ongoing studies on alternative food in Indonesia, during the Dutch colonial era. The study is expected to be completed in 2024.
At that time, according to him, Maluku was only an experimental place. Until from that place, cassava was eventually massively produced and traded in Java. At that time, Java was experiencing a rice crisis and famine due to the implementation of the forced planting system. It's just that there is no answer to the cause or reason why Maluku was chosen as a place to experiment.
Cassava was brought by the Dutch, why?
Of course, the Dutch must have their own reasons why cassava was chosen to be brought to Indonesia. However, according to them, the Dutch reflected on the success of Spain which made it an alternative food in Peru.
The Dutch Colonial Government, eventually until around the 20th century, saw an indicator in a region that was experiencing a famine or food crisis with cassava. At that time, the Dutch did not think of alternative food options besides cassava. Even the Dutch did not care about the community, whether they liked or did not eat cassava.
Initially, he referred to several archives revealing the introduction of cassava in Java, not so successful and successful. Because at that time the local people did not know and like cassava.
Cassava's peak popularity was only felt during the Japanese colonial period, because at that time, cassava was the only food and there was no other food.
"Cassava was only recognized in the 1940s. Meanwhile, during the first 1850, cassava was introduced until the end of the colonial period, it was not very popular. Until the Japanese boom period and so on," said Reinhart.
In addition, the Dutch were influenced by the success of the revolutions in France and England, so they saw cassava as a lower-class food, and they thought it was appropriate to give it to the people under their colony.
